Why Custom Cabinetry Elevates Your Home Design

There are many benefits of designing and installing custom cabinetry, whether you're building a new home or updating an existing one.

On a practical level, custom cabinet design allows you to use your space more wisely than stock cabinets because they fit the exact dimensions of your custom home. Having made-to-order cabinets will also help you meet your functionality and storage needs, while not compromising in space and aesthetic.

On an aesthetic level, custom luxury cabinets can transform your home into an authentic reflection of your style. The seemingly endless combination of shapes, sizes, features, materials, designs, and finishes available lets you trade the generic look of stock cabinets for a home design style that’s uniquely you.

Overall, custom cabinetry can be a worthwhile investment for many savvy homeowners. It elevates the function and design of your home—and its value, as well. It also lasts much longer than most stock cabinetry as it’s designed with superior materials and craftsmanship.

Cabinet Finish Options

The finish of your custom cabinets determines so much of their overall look, feel, and durability. The brands we work with offer high-quality finishes that will keep your cabinets looking exquisite for years. Here are some of the finish options you’ll have when you work with us:

Stain

Stain uses natural pigments and dyes to soak color into the grain. This finish is an excellent option if you want to bring out solid wood cabinets' natural beauty. Stains can be water- or solvent-based and easy to maintain because they won’t easily fade, crack, or peel.

Paint

Paint is one of the most versatile finishes for its vast color options. Different types of paint have varying degrees of shine: the more gloss, the more durable—and it’s easy to clean painted cabinetry. Matte paint is flat, and enamel paint is extremely glossy, while semi-gloss and satin paint has moderate levels of shine.

Milk Paint

We also offer the option of milk paint, which is made from 100% natural ingredients and is non-toxic and biodegradable. This type of paint can easily create a distressed look because it goes on in thinner layers than oil or latex-based paint. If you prefer this environmentally friendly paint but a more polished look, we can use more layers and seal it with a top coat.

Lacquer

This type of solvent-based paint can be applied in layers to create a thick coating on the surface of your cabinets. Like other types of paint, it’s available in various colors and gloss levels. Although it’s easy to clean, it can crack easily if your wood cabinets swell.

Glaze

Glaze can be an attractive choice for cabinets with ornate designs or for giving them a more antique look. We can apply this transparent or semi-transparent finish over other finishes—typically paints or stains, to help highlight a designer cabinet’s details. Semi-transparent shades range from light to dark, and they’re usually somewhat neutral hues such as white, beige, brown, and gray.

Varnish

This type of custom cabinet finish is a clear, protective coat that can increase the life of your cabinets. Like glaze, varnish is a standard topcoat that is applied over other types of finishes. Polyurethane and conversion are the most common types of varnishes. Polyurethane varnish is made with a plastic that dries as a strong finish, and conversion varnish uses a combination of resin and acid to create an even stronger finish.

Natural

Leaving the wood unfinished might be an option for hardwood cabinets such as maple or oak. However, they’ll be more susceptible to damage and could be harder to clean. At the same time, you could easily finish them in the future if needed.

Some of our high-end custom-designed cabinet manufacturers also offer other types of finishes that are less common, including pure metal, powder coat, foil, polyester, and specialty veneers. TBS Design Gallery will work with you to find the best custom cabinet material and finish to give you the look of your dreams.

Cabinet Design: Storage and Inserts

The interior of your cabinetry is just as important as the exterior. The interior of your high-end cabinetry supports the function you will want based on the space the custom designed cabinetry will be used in. TBS Design Gallery can customize the inside of your cabinets in many ways to optimize functionality, accessibility, organization, and storage capabilities.

These unique features are an essential benefit of custom builds because they allow your cabinets to serve purposes that stock cabinets won’t. They also help you take full advantage of the space throughout your custom designed home.

Here are some examples of the types of custom storage and insert solutions available to you:

  • Special shelving
  • Storage baskets
  • Drawer dividers and organizers
  • Cabinet dividers and organizers
  • Closet systems
  • Vanity inserts
  • Pull-out trays
  • Flip-down trays
  • Lazy Susans or turntables
  • Trash bins
  • Drawer sliders
  • Corner storage solutions

We work with our partners to create custom inserts and storage solutions to match the exact specifications to meet your needs. We can design your cabinetry using a variety of high-quality materials to create a cohesive look throughout your home.

Other Buying Considerations

If you’re considering custom cabinetry, it’s a good idea to understand how the process works before you buy. When the team at TBS Design Gallery works with you, we’ll begin by taking the time to understand your needs and wants, your desired budget, and your ideal timeframe.

In the pre-proposal phase, we’ll review architectural plans, identify what types of products and services you need, choose manufacturing partners that offer what you’re looking for, and create cost estimates based on your budget. Once we reach an agreement, we’ll move to the discovery phase, where we’ll build your project team, create a preliminary design strategy and scope of work, and propose a plan and timeline.

Next, in the design phase, we’ll begin to produce designs and spec materials, identify specifications, submit costs, place orders, get building permit schedules, and finalize a scope of work. When we move to the implementation phase, we’ll handle all the logistics and quality control to ensure the cabinetry's build and installation happens as expected and on schedule.

At the end of the project, we’ll follow up to tie up any loose ends and ensure manufacturer warranty compliance. But our relationship won’t end there: We’ll be there if you need us, and we’ll be happy to remain your partner for your future custom cabinetry needs.

Let our team at TBS Design Gallery partner with you to make your ideas come to life. Our team will guide you through the entire process. If you’re ready to start, call us at TBS Design Gallery today at (650) 416-8888.
